The influence of the rich Spanish heritage in Sain

The influence of the rich Spanish heritage in Saint Augustine can be seen everywhere, from the town plan with a central plaza and Cathedral to the castillo de San Marcos and Nombre de Dios mission

⛲️ The narrow streets with their Spanish names, the open balconies and shaded patios and the Spanish character of much of the food and wine reflect the strong influence of Spanish culture that continues in Saint Augustine to this day

🛡️When Pedro Menéndez de Avilés established the settlement in 1565, it was supported by Spain and received supplies from other Spanish ports in the Caribbean. With the exception of a 20 year period of British rule, Saint Augustine remained one of Spain’s most valued outpost in the New World until Florida became a US territory in 1821

📜 What I love about Saint Augustine today is how the feel and spirit of the original town has been preserved, the homes restored and a plaque on each of them explains the history of the house and its inhabitants. It’s like walking through history

Saint Augustine! The first North American continen

Saint Augustine! The first North American continental city. The place where Ponce de León landed in 1513 and Pedro Menéndez de Avilés in 1565 to establish the first Spanish (and European!) community in the continental United States

🏰 Mission Nombre de Dios, where the first parish mass was said in 1565, Castillo de San Marcos, the Spanish fort built in 1672 and which took 23 years to complete, or the Cathedral Basilica, North America’s first parish, together with the many preserved and rebuilt original homes, are constant reminders to the visitor of the city’s Spanish origins.

🏖️ A destination to please all in our family, those who like to visit and learn (mostly me!) and those who want to relax and find the best food around 🍽️ So far we recommend Ice Plant (located in an old, industrial ice plant, as the name implies), Harvest & Reel, located on Anastasia Beach and Casa Reina, right across from the harbor. We also had a quick, delicious lunch of empanadas at the Salcedo house, original home of Spanish Artillery Captain Pedro José Salcedo and his family, who bought it in 1784

Back in the United States, but the travels continu

Back in the United States, but the travels continue! Heading to Saint Augustine, Florida, by way of Asheville, North Carolina, where we visited one of my bucket list restaurants, Cúrate, by chefs Katie Button and Felix Meana who worked with chef José Andrés in Washington DC, Ferran Adrià at El Bulli in Spain and The Bazaar in LA 🐖🥩 With no reservation, we had to sit at the bar, which was even better! What a wonderful dinner of Spanish delicacies! A must visit if you are in Asheville. We will try to stop by again on our way back home
